2.97 Friday morning presentation details

1.  Medlinks Utility Belt
2.  Eco-tainer
3.  SpaceBar
4.  Wire+
5.  Nighthawk
6.  Stool!!
7.  Porta-Desk
8.  Kitty Pinata
9.  Bike Barista

So far, everyone has done a great job in presenting your problem, process, and products to the class in the past presentations!  Friday, you will have the chance to present to an outside group of reviewers, from MIT and not, of different backgrounds, all *somewhat* related to design.  We will scope the project as shown at the bottom, so the reviewers know your project prompt.

Each team will have exactly 3 minutes to present in whatever format they think is most effective.  I believe all teams have the material already necessary.  The difficult part will be choosing what and how to present in 3 minutes.  2 minutes will be allotted for Q & A from the outside reviewers.  This is an important skill to learn: having too much material and deciding how to clearly and concisely convey your work to a fresh audience.  The presentation should *roughly* address these questions:

  • what is and how did you come up with your compelling need?
  • why were current solutions not sufficient?
  • how did you scope/frame your problem? i.e. what were your goals in developing the prototype as shown?
  • how did the prototype turn out? i.e. show it in use!
  • remaining concerns/next steps

If you need any help in figuring out what/how to present, feel free to email us or drop by lab.  Use slides, movie, photos as you feel appropriate.

To avoid A/V problems like we've encountered the past two times (no worries.  the first two presentations were done precisely to smooth out any problems), please post all materials by 10pm Thursday.  One member from each team must arrive by 930am Friday to make sure the presentation runs smoothly.

Submit the materials in this form

  • 3 minutes exact for each team
  • materials submitted by 10pm Thursday evening to here
  • at least one team member show up 930am Friday to run through slides
  • ask if you need help/advice with anything!

Design-a-palooza is a class intended to teach novices the basics of the early stages of the design process.  This 2 week course introduces creativity, product design, user needs, concept generation, concept selection and prototyping to students of all majors and years. For their cardboard project, they were asked to find a compelling need and develop a functional prototype of a product that could be used in the campus setting. These were the requirements of the product:

  • made primarily out of cardboard
  • non-paper materials should be recyclable, easily found around campus
  • users could possibly make it for themselves

Wednesday presentation logistics

Reminders for Wednesday's presentations

-(if you've made a logo, place it somewhere in your presentation.  you can get feedback from the rest of the class afterwards :)

-content:
a. less than a minute: update on what has changed, if any, and how you approached things since Friday
b. 1-2 min of compelling live demo and/or video footage of product-in-action, with users;  whatever is most convincing
c. less than a minute: how you would move forward
Each team has a total of 6 minutes, including Q & A, so your planned presentation should be no longer than 4 minutes.

-only use slides as you see fit. if you use slides, they are due by 1159pm tonight.  if possible, post somewhere and send link.  if there are fonts/animations etc, email to specify what you are picky about :)  .pdf is safest.  worse case, you can use your laptop, but I prefer to have all the presentations on one computer.  i can use PowerPoint this time instead, if needed.

-for the movies, try to have those posted by tonight too.  otherwise, have them posted ASAP before class or bring it to 3-446 by 945am on a flash drive.  this way I can load everything onto to the computer.  please let me know exactly when you are showing the videos with respsect to your slides, if applicable.

Presentation order!  If your name has changed, email me.

1.  Medlinks Utility Belt
2.  Eco-tainer
3.  SpaceBar
4.  Wire+
5.  Nighthawk
6.  Brown Stool
7.  Porta-Desk
8.  Kitty Pinata
9.  Bike Barista

Chindogu update

Here are the scores.  Dont take them too seriously.  However, you can use the prelim results to guide your Chindogu making for Thursday:

http://web.mit.edu/ideation/2.97/docs/project2/chindogu-1-results.txt
===========
Submit your Chindogu here, by 5pm Thursday.

You can resubmit the Chindogu round 1 from today.  The concept must be the same, but you can retake photo, change name, change layout of 8.5"x11" space etc..  When you submit, please submit ONE file.  If you have multiple pictures, you MUST lay it out yourself.  Also have the title overlayed how you want (font, color, position) onto the ONE file you submit for each chindogu.  In other words, what you submit is what will be printed at CopyTech, scaled to 8.5"x11".

Things to think about for your Chindogu, either of the 3:  Remember that it must solve a problem AND be impractical at the same time (problem solving + unuselessness).  It should be communicated quickly and clearly through the picture (transparency + simplicity).  Finally, it should be fun :D (hilarity)

http://designapalooza.posterous.com/297-project-2

Let me know if you have any questions.  Great start today!

Wednesday class - Solidworks Tutorial - install solidworks and bring laptop if possible

Petek will be leading the SolidWorks tutorial 11:30-1:00 PM this Wednesday during class. It
is intended as a introduction into using a CAD program. It is optional, although
students who have a strong background are encouraged to stay and play
around/help out with the tutorial.

If at all possible, we ask that you bring a laptop with Solidworks installed
(install this prior to the tutorial) as well as a mouse. Students at the
Institute can install Solidworks following the instructions on the following
website:

https://web.mit.edu/mecheng/computing/Software/SW2007-8/

If you will not be able to bring a laptop + mouse, let us know ASAP!
